Loose Ends
Published in Hardcover by Xlibris Corporation (September, 1902)
Author: Electa Rome Parks
Average review score:

What a difference a day (or night) can make....
Wow! What a love story! This book kept me on the edge of my seat throughout its entirety. I couldn't put it down the first night and then when I got mid-way there were yet other surprises that deepened the plot even more. In the 9th hour, Parks surprised me by riuniting ex's in the heat of the night and then later ending that tragey with an even greater tragedy that proved to be the true lesson for all. There is truly a thin line between love and pain but fortunately Mia and Christian were able to overcome and tie their loose ends back up. This is a book that I will certainly revisit in the future! Great job Electa!!!This script could easily be written for theater and/or tv series.......Hope it doesn't end here.

Loose Ends unravel from time to time...
After an approximate year and a half wait, the much-anticipated second book Loose Ends has hit shelves, and it is every bit as dramatic, hot and steamy as its predecessor, The Ties that Bind. Author, Electa Rome Parks has the gift and she's certainly using it with her second novel. The characters Brice, Mia, and Christian are back along with Brice's second wife Kree. Loose Ends is so well written that I was immediately drawn back into the characters and my love/hate relationship with them flourished. I was most impressed that this book kept this reader engaged until the very last page. No figuring out what was going to happen, until you read it... believe that!

Continuing on in the vein of a "modern day love story with a twist", Loose ends really winds up. Brice and Mia are divorced and Mia has married his best friend Christian. Brice has also remarried, a lovely lady who could be Mia's younger sister, Kree. All have relocated and settled down in Atlanta. The focus, after the turmoil that the three friends have faced, is the realization that it is time to reunite the lifelong friendship between Brice and Christian. Can it be done? How will Mia and Kree react to each other? How will Christian take to his friend who treated his wife so horribly? Told from the individual voices of four of the characters, Ms. Parks has added just enough sizzle to keep you hot, enough intrigue to keep you guessing, enough selfishness to make you mad, all backed by excellent story telling. Mia and Christian have an adorable daughter named Lyric and a fulfilling life together. Brice will always be Brice and Kree is the seemingly submissive wife, totally accepting of his behavior but I wouldn't call their relationship happy. Things aren't always as they seem however and Brice has major control issues. Stemming from a hard childhood, these issues have never been explored professionally and the ramifications of his actions moves this story down an unexpected path that had me up all types of day and night to finish.

Understanding
"13 HOURS, Do you hear me 13 hours"! I finished this book as soon as I picked it up. I was sucked in from the first page, I could'nt stop. I read Ms Parks first book with the same fever. So I was glad to see her wrap it up with this book. I have enjoyed books before, but with this one I found myself angry, happy, sad and resentful all at once. At one moment I wanted to kill Mia myself, the next I wanted to hug her. It was just that good. Please read it, and Thank you Ms Parks for writting this book. It is something a lot of women need to read, to break the hold on love and bondage some men have on us.

Be Our Guest: Perfecting the Art of Customer Service (Disney Institute Leadership Series)
Published in Hardcover by Hyperion (May, 2001)
Authors: The Disney Institute and Michael D. Eisner
Average review score:

Read, Then go SEE the MAGIC...
My wife and I have been to Walt Disney World 3 times in the last 4 years and it's getting tough to explain to our friends and family just why it is we spend money and valuable vacation time at the same place. In a word, it's: MAGIC. Walt Disney World is so much more than an collection of amusement parks filled with thematic attractions interspersed with gift shops and restaurants. Walt Disney World is a study in customer service excellence. It is one man's dream come true. We go as much to be inspired as we do to relax and have fun. This book was an excellent companion to our visit providing insight into just how Disney consistently delivers a quality experience.

So why is Disney flat-lining? Well, this is off the book, but if Michael and the gang are listening- in a word it is "Saturation". In Disney's effort to "be everywhere" the magic wears off. Disney stores in the mall, all over radio and TV, and in many ways becoming omnipresent, they are going to pull a "Planet Hollywood". They need to keep a healthy distance- not chasing people everywhere for fear the competition vying for their time and attention will somehow win out. Just keep doing the basics well and let the customers come and find you.

Outstanding Book About Disney, By Disney
I highly recommend this easy-reading book for three reasons. First, it helped me understand and appreciate how Disney continues to deliver the highest quality products and services year-in and year-out. Secondly, it clearly described many proven ways and concepts to improve my organization's customer service. Lastly, this book gave me a lot of practical lessons that can and should be adapted to fit into most management or leadership situations.

I read a couple of outstanding books by Disney-outsiders ("Built to Last" by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras, and "The Disney Way" by Bill Capodagli and Lynn Jackson) about how and why they were so impressed with Disney. I wanted to read a book about a Disney-insider's perspectives on what Disney does to impress everyone and exceed all expectations. This book showed me the "what" of Disney's practical magic of customer service: a full-time business of shared values, enforced standards, focused work, self-discipline, and attention to detail that is virtually transparent to all Disney guests. I got all that I wanted and more from this outstanding book.

After I finished reading this book, I read through my highlights and realized that the following paragraph from the introduction perfectly previewed the book:

"In this book, we take you behind the scenes to discover Disney best practices and philosophies in action. We provide you with an insider's glimpse of quality service principles in action both at Walt Disney World, as told from the perspectives of cast members [Disney-speak for "employees"], and in other organizations, as told by executives who have participated in Disney Institute programs. Walt Disney's fundamentals for success still ring true. You build the best product you can. You give people effective training to support the delivery of exceptional service. You learn from your experiences. And you celebrate success. You never stop growing. You never stop believing."

Sharing the secrets behind Disney's 'practical magic' in this book is yet another example of Disney's commitment to exceptional guest [Disney-speak for "customer"] service. Read this book and enjoy being Disney's guest.

Great Teaching Tool
As the Director of an Entrepreneurship Program at a private University, I have found this book to be a valuable teaching tool. Students at all levels of learning enjoy the book because it connects practical stories that students can understand to important aspects of customer service as well as employee management. As recent visitors with our two young children, my wife and I enjoyed the book purely from a "guest" perspective. You can really appreciate all that goes into the magic of the Disney parks by reading this book.

Seasons of My Heart
Published in Hardcover by J Countryman Books (November, 1998)
Authors: Barbara Peretti, Carrie Parks, and Frank E. Peretti
Average review score:

a white washed story
Everyone thinks their own black is the blackest. Peretti is no exception. While they did go through lean times both physically and spritiually this story in no way compares to other Christian people who triumphied over tragedy. Possibly there is an untold story here that would explain the unlying tone of anger. All in all the basic teaching of realiance on God is neutralized by a pity story.

True love story
Frank and Barb Peretti are an inspiration and blessing to anyone who meets them. Their life and marriage, as told through this wonderful book, should be in the hands of every couple starting out their lives together. I know I have come to know the Lord through them, and have been inspired in every part of my life through this experience. Not every book can change your life. I pray this one will. I know that the chance to do the art work for Barb's writing, working with my husband and fine artist, Rick, has changed my life. Frank and Barb, I love you guys! -Carrie

I'm pleased you've visited my sight. Let me tell you why!
The idea of writing "Seasons of My Heart" came when my husband and best-selling author Frank Peretti and I gathered all of our old diaries and photo albums together and began reviewing our twenty-five years of marriage. The diaries brought back many painful yet endearing memories that clarified for us just how much we had lived and how we had grown together in our life united in the Lord. It was Frank who encouraged me to share these memories. He thought we had something to give others and motivated me to write it down.

In "Seasons of My Heart" I share with you love letters written to one another during our dating years. I also share excerpts from our diaries when at times we poured our hearts out to the Lord questionsing the very direction our life was headed.

Christendom tends to put authors, artists, speakers and pastors on a higher plane than reality. They are just like you. They feel the joy in experiencing God's blessings but they also question His dealings, they go through seasons of gloom and dejection and find themselves crying out to the God of the universe only to hear silence echoing back.

"Seasons of My Heart" has been used as a devotional, a gift book, an art book and to my surprise, it has even been used as a reference for sermon material! I've been told it has touched lives and given others a new trust and reliance upon the Lord. If you've experienced spiritual burnout, despondency in not knowng God's will for your life or know what it feels to carry the heavy burdens of depression and despair then I think my book will bring hope and direction to your life in a special, personal way.

If you've enjoyed my husband's novels, "This Present Darkness", "Piercing the Darkness", "Tilly", "Prophet", "The Oath", or "The Visitation" or if you've enjoyed reading his children's books from "The Cooper Family Adventure Series" then I think you'll enjoy getting to know Frank Peretti on a more personal level.

The book has been divided into 40 short, two-page, easy-to-read stories from Frank and my life and each is beautfilly illustrated by my close friend Carrie Stewart Parks. Christians and fine art enthrusiasts alike have enjoyed the book. I call it my own "Cinderella Story." You'll find it to be a love story, a tale of passion, of heartache, of committment and hope.

If through this book I can be of any encouragement to you, then may the Lord Jesus use it! Blessings - Barbara J Peretti

Outdoor Family Guide to Yellowstone and Grand Teton
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (June, 2003)
Author: Lisa Gollin Evans
Average review score:

No winter topics covered
This may be a great book for summer Yellowstone adventurers, but there is nothing mentioned about the beauty of Yellowstone during the winter. So, basically it was worthless and a waste of $$. We just got back from a winter snowmobiling tour, and it was amazing. I would suggest the Moon Handbooks - Yellowstone - Grand Teton National Parks...

Excellent book
Lots of good information in this book really helped prepare us for our trip to Yellowstone. Hike information was great and even pointed out when certain trails opened. This was very helpful in planning since we were traveling in May before many trails were open.

The best guide for the Teton Yellowstone area!
I purchased this book and several others for my trip to the Tetons and Yellowstone. This book was very informative on lodging, trails, sightseeing and travel. This guide was a time saver as well giving me ideas of the trails and difficulty and estimated time. Many things to do and lots of recommendations for children but its so much more. Definately a keeper and will use next time im planning a vacation to the area. Oh by the way, i do recommend a trip to the Tetons and Yellowstone. The tetons were breathtaking and definately do the trip accross Jenny Lake. Yellowstone, WOW the gysers, wildlife, fishing it was terrific. Have Fun. Jeff

Universal Orlando, 2003: The Ultimate Guide to the Ultimate Theme Park Adventure
Published in Paperback by Intrepid Traveler (November, 2002)
Author: Kelly Monaghan
Average review score:

Overly cheerleader-ish
I noticed that this book had practically nothing bad to say about anything in the park. It is extremely enthusiastic about everything (for example, while slightly acknowledging the cheesy nature of the Kong ride, the book just goes on about how pretty the scenery is instead.) It makes it sound like Universal invented the S&S Space Shot tower with Dr. Doom's Fearfall, when, in actuality, the same ride was made by many parks first... etc. Do you know what's even better? When I was browsing the Universal gift shops, this book was featured prominently in many of them. If you want the book that Universal wants you to read, get this one.

Don't go to Orlando without this book !
This book is the best unbiased, comprehensive compilation of all things Universal on the market. If you are spending any amount of time in Orlando, pick up:
1) Universal Orlando (Monaghan)
2) The Unofficial Guide to Disney World (Sehlinger)
3) The Other Orlando (Monaghan)

Ride, Resort, and Restaurant reviews are thorough and right on the mark. After reading this, you'll feel like an "insider" and get the most out of your vacation. You'll recover the cost of this book after reading the first 31 pages. By the end of the book, you'll be able to extend your vacation or put much less of a dent in your credit cards.

BTW - The fact that this book is for sale at Universal should be a feather in Universal's cap, not an indictment against this book's accuracy. I wonder if Disney will ever feature the "Unofficial" guide in their stores.

Excellent and Informative Book
Must have for first time travelers as well as returning visitors. This book contained some excellent tips for "hidden" things I wouldn't have noticed otherwise. His ride and show details are very descriptive.

When My Name Was Keoko
Published in Hardcover by Clarion Books (18 March, 2002)
Author: Linda Sue Park
Average review score:

Interesting history
Linda Park is an enjoyable author, but I found this book disappointing. The book, The Year of Impossible Good-byes (referred to in the bibliography) is such a poignant, true account of the same time period for the same age group that this story seems watered down. It is still worth reading, but if you haven't read The Year of Impossible Good-byes, and this part of history interests you, make sure you read them both!

Flew by so fast, I wished it was longer...
I read this book in one night. It was so easy to get into and the two characters that told the story, Tae-yul and Sun-hee, were very easy to move back and forth with. I liked how the author included the dates as well. Anyways, this book focuses on a brother and sister living in Korea during WWII, when it is under Japan's occupation. Seeing what the Japanese made the Koreans do, as well as seeing the wonderfully developed characters grow and change made this book so interesting. I only wish that the end wrapped up a few loose ends.

Well-written, engaging, and accessible for young readers
I read this book with my daughter's book club (4th graders) and I think I enjoyed it even more than the kids did. Because it was written for young adults, the writing style is simple and accessible, but the story and, in particular, the history that is set forth in this book is certainly worth reading. Americans don't learn enough about other culture. This is a great opportunity to learn about WWII through the perspective of a young Korean girl, living in Japanese-occupied Korea. I highly recommend this book.

Bug Park
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Baen Books (01 April, 1998)
Author: James Hogan
Average review score:

No Bugs : Johnny Quest vs. The Evil Step-Mother
Mr. Hogan did a fantastic job with the physics in this book. That is the one thing that kept me reading more than anything else. What I was disappointed in, is that fact that with a title of "Bug Park", there are so few insects/arthropods of any kind in the story, it is like eating a McD's cherry pie, and finding only one cherry...very disappointing indeed. The story should be re-titled.

Also, one point to nit-pick, for scientific names of any organism, when spelling the binomial name out, the genus is capitalized and the species is *always* lower case. On page396, "Limenitis lorquini"is what I am referring too, and the editors should be ashamed of themselves, because this is not the author's fault.

The story was enjoyable, the plot moves well, but the family structure was almost a direct parallel to Johnny Quest, including Bandit, I mean Batcat. I kept becoming distracted from the story as I read "Hoggi" instead of Taki etc., and like any good J.Q. story, the villain perishes in their own nefarious trap, leaving the hero's hands clean.

Finally, I enjoyed the little "Microcosm" joke at the end, I'm sure you will too.

Good juvenile hard-science sf
As I was reading this novel I thought, "This reminds me of Heinlein's juveniles." Sure enough, a few pages later Hogan uses the word, "Heinleinesque." Even though this book is ostensibly aimed at teenagers, it can be enjoyed by adults. Hogan does a wonderful job of describing reality from a bug's point of view. The hard science is good, and there is a great scene where the two boys, using nanorobots, attack a centipide the way a couple of knights would attack a dragon. And they're even saving a damsel in distress, although, since she is using a nanorobot, her body is safely someplace else. There's budding love, evil
villains, murderous nanorobots, two teenage heros, and all kinds of goodies.

Spielberg, make this into a movie!
Bug Park was a really fun read. As usual, Hogan comes from a base of hard science, which helps makes the premise believable. The only thing I found that bothered me was the contrived bit with one of the kid's tie to organised crime. Still, loved the book and it would make a great family movie. Someone needs to give a copy to Steven.

Modern Library : Complete Novels of Jane Austen, Volume I : Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice, Mansfield Park
Published in Hardcover by Modern Library (September, 1992)
Author: Jane Austen
Average review score:

Caveat Emptor - DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM BEFORE READING THIS
This review is not for the novels of Jane Austen, rather for the item offered here on amazon.com

Much to my surprise, after I ordered "The Complete Novels of Jane Austen (Modern Library Series)" ISBN 0679600264, only one book arrived. As pictured above, Vol I contains S&S, P&P, and MP.

The other three novels must be in Vol II, you surmise? Wrong! THAT IS ALL YOU GET !

Apparently, "complete" is a relative term, meaning "half of". At best, this listing shows ignorance. At worst, this listing is fraud.

Jane's prose is perfect

Jane Austen is still where she belongs, between book covers. We know the stories are good, but what isn't immediately obvious is the many recent adaptations is what an impeccable writer of English prose she is - no posturing word-dropper, no purveyer of hoary terminology, but a fine, simple, straightforward narrator.

She is brief but telling, using tilt and tone to make us smile. She doesn't bore with tedious flashbacks or podding descriptions of a new character's background. And she tells us what we wanted to know, just when we want to know it. As I am wondering what became of Mr. Bingley, he turns up; as I am trying to remember what the party is doing in Bath, it becomes clear. She's always ahead, dropping just the right number of crumbs.

Jane's world moved slowly, and reading her takes time. Her cncerns are universal - how to fill the hours of the day, the pairing of single young men and women, the effects of money, household matters. Her ethical domain is dominated by consideration - of others' feelings, needs, requirements. The occasional rebellious spirit is not admired, concepts such as fulfillment and freedom never enter her head. As for "needs" beyond basic physical ones - an idea that would have astonished her - she would have substituted "obligations."

But there is something about all this that keeps us going back, and back and back.

Timeless
Jane Austen's novel, Pride and Prejudice is, through written long ago, a timeless tale of truth and human beings. It is a truly comical story, with an uncomical moral as genuine and universal as it was when in the eighteenth century. It's characters shall always remain among the most beloved in literature.

Ultimate Guide to Asheville & Hendersonville Including the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina: Your Complete Guide to the Western North Carolina Region
Published in Paperback by Alexander Books (August, 1900)
Author: Lee James Pantas
Average review score:

Overkill
Much too much information to be really useful, because most of it is pretty superficial. How can it be otherwise, when the author has crammed every possible thing he can think of into a book that can't accommodate so much information? The book is also poorly organized/structured, and with such a large amount of material, good organization is critical. The multitude of cross-references is extremely annoying -- the reader shouldn't have to keep flipping around the book to find information on one subject. The author's drawings are very nice, but on the whole the book looks like it was not professionally produced (just looking at the cover gives me a headache.) If you want a book on Asheville, you're much better off with something less comprehensive that has more depth. (E.g., a lengthy list of attractions or restaurants or other things that provides little or no description doesn't do me any good . . . ) Try "The Underground Asheville Guide" as an alternative -- it's a little too cute, but ultimately more helpful . . .

Fantastic Guidebook
My wife and I had bought several books about Western North Carolina before we found Mr. Pantas'. After spending the last week reading over the information inside the book, all I can say is that we did ourselves a dis-service in purchasing all of the other books. I have never seen a more comphehensive and detailed outline, before this book, about a place I was scheduled to visit and potentially relocate too. The "pictures" are great and I hope to see more of his works of art while in Western North Carolina. The Ultimate Guide is a an extraordinarily valuable research tool.

Well used for planning our vacation from the UK
A great book, we have used the book to plan our trip, from the UK to Asheville, we are now looking forward to the trip, and experiencing sights and tastes of north carolina,

Not having been to North Carolina previously, we are heavilly dependant on research material, of which this book is great.

Another review will be made after testing the book out, but if Asheville is as good as the book, then we should have no worries.

A Brush with Disney : An Artist's Journey, Told through the words and works of Herbert Dickens Ryman
Published in Hardcover by Camphor Tree Pub (01 October, 2000)
Authors: Herbert Dickens Ryman, David Mumford, Bruce Gordon, and Carroll Foundation
Average review score:

Not enough Disney
I hate to sound like an ingrate writing this review: Herb Ryman has done some great illustrations. Unfortunately, this book spends too much time showcasing Herb Ryman's non-Disney art--which is pretty mediocre--and not enough space showcasing his Disney work. The highlight of the book--Ryman's first illustration of the soon-to-be-built Disneyland--is spread across two pages, but the page break makes it nearly impossible to decipher what's in the middle of the drawing. (It should have perhaps been on a fold-out, or at least on a single, uninterrupted page.) Other great illustrations, especially early renderings of Tomorrowland, are printed in extremely small 3" images, making them very hard to read. All in all, I'd say don't bother with this book. Ryman's best drawings are already showcased in many other books.

Not so much for Disney historians...
As a general book about the person Herb Ryman, it is very pretty and well made, and deserves 5 stars.
But as a source of info for the Disney historian, all I can say is: get the public library near you to buy a copy.
Personally, I feel I should have waited to buy it until I had the chance to have a look at the contents...
